IGNOU Relaunches ‘Gyan Darshan’ - its Educational Content Broadcast Channel

  • IGNOU has relaunched its educational content broadcast channel - Gyan Darshan which was earlier shut down on the directions of ISRO.
  • Gyan Darshan content will also be made available on mobile devices very soon for greater accessibility.
IGNOU Relaunches ‘Gyan Darshan’ - its Educational Content Broadcast Channel

On September 25, 2017, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) relaunched its ‘Gyan Darshan’ broadcast channel which is a medium for dissemination of educational content through electronic media. The channel was relaunched through webcasting along with its EMPC (Electronic Media Production Centre) page on Facebook.

Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, Professor Ravindra Kumar revealed that the varsity is a digital open university that has tried to reduce the gap between the learners and the faculty members as well as varied resources of the varsity. He said that the Gyan Darshan programmes can now be accessed through the official website of IGNOU. The approach has been relaunched to suit the requirements of the students of the digital age, he said. Furthermore, steps are also being taken to make university’s programmes available on mobile phones as well.

Director of EMPC of IGNOU, Professor Kapil Kumar indicated that the channel is a platform to promote cultural awareness and provide empowerment to those affiliated with it on varied themes such as challenges and issues related to cultural heritage, societal development, environment etc. The EPMC page on Facebook will provide regular updates on Indian education besides acting as a major source of feedback from learners across the world, he added.

Kumar also emphasised on the importance of the facility with regard to the personnel of country’s armed forces who will be able to continue their education even while guarding the borders of the country. Gyan Darshan facility will also be made available in the IGNOU study centres located in West Asia and African countries, he said.

Gyan Darshan channel ran successfully until June 2014 when it was first introduced. Later, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) ordered shutting down the channel with an objective to facilitate its migration from INSAT 3C to GSAT-10.
