From July 2019, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is all set to start a Certificate Programme in Yoga (CPY). the decision came from the university just before the International Yoga Day which gets observed every year on 21st June.
The course will be open for applying by all the candidates who have passed class 12 level examination with English as a compulsory subject as the mode of course commencement will be in English. The course will have a 10,000/- fee for the whole programme which will run for 6 months. However, the candidates will be given 2 years to complete the course.
The program which will offer a total of 16 credits in 3 courses, will be conducted around the study centres in India located at Delhi, Haridwar, Bhubaneswar, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Ladnun, Chennai, Pune and Mumbai.
The basic principles and benefits of Yoga will be understood by the student at the completion of the course, as claimed by S. B. Arora who is a professor at IGNOU. He added that the programme will also make the students aware of the history and origin of yoga with the contribution in the field made by different yogis through the course of time. The students will also learn to achieve physical and mental well-being through yoga.

Claiming that yoga is base on a very subtle science that brings harmony between the mind and the body, a press release from IGNOU stated that yoga is one of the most powerful means to attain emotional, physical and mental well-being. Yoga, as a science and art of healthy living, contributes to several benefits including stress management, health and education.
