The 17 th convocation ceremony of IIIT Hyderabad (International Institute of Information Technology) took place on August 11, 2018. This year, 136 research students including 11 Ph.Ds graduated from IIIT Hyderabad. Executive Vice-Chairman of Infosys, Kris Gopalakrishnan was the Chief Guest of the occasion. Director of IIIT Hyderabad, Professor PJ Narayanan presented the annual report of the institute.
IIIT Hyderabad Director revealed that the premier institute will soon establish a Centre of Excellence in Blockchain Technology with an aim to foster research in emerging areas. In January 2018, IIIT Hyderabad established a Product Lab under Technology Transfer Office. The institute has also shown significant performance in placements in 2018. Around 136 companies participated in the campus placement process, and the institute has been successful in recording 100% placements, he concluded.

Delivering the convocation address, Chief Guest Kris Gopalakrishnan urged the graduating students to try and enumerate five key capabilities such as:
- Business awareness and consumer-centric approach
- Developing a set of consistent ethics and values in life
- Acquiring new leadership skills
- Learning new problem-solving capabilities
- Understanding & foreseeing the role of technology in life for a successful career
Kris Gopalakrishnan further explained that students must imbibe six values such as innovation for future work-life, compassion, excellence, transparency, fairness and integrity.

Kris Gopalakrishnan indicated that the future jobs will require one to utilise digital systems . Therefore, there is a need to coexist with artificial intelligence systems.
In 2018, 11 students received programme gold medals for their outstanding academic performance.
