Indian Institute of Management - IIM Calcutta has decided to include graduation marks in the selection criteria of shortlisting the candidates for the interview round. IIM Ahmedabad , IIM Lucknow , and IIM Bangalore also consider giving 10% to 20% weightage to the marks obtained by the candidate at the graduation level.
The chairman of the admission committee and the assistant professor of IIM Calcutta, Mr. Sumanta Basu said that the change was necessary to bring in admission criteria for testing the academic consistency of the candidate. Even though CAT is the prime criteria to enter IIMs, the IIM Calcutta management committee has felt that the graduation performance should be checked to assess the academic achievements of the candidate as it will be helpful to know the student’s ability to handle the academic pressure.
Mr. Basu added that the two year’s rigorous course work becomes intolerable for many students at the institute. It has minor relations to the academic consistency shown by the students at bachelors level. The inclusion of graduation marks will be useful to filter out students who do not have academic consistency.
The move is interlinked to the rising number of working professionals attempting to crack the CAT examination. Prof Basu said that earlier, most students applied for CAT Exam after completing their graduation, and it was a problem for IIM Calcutta to assess their graduation performance. Making the selection process comprehensive where the academic performance from school to university will be considered along with work experience.
Mr Basu informed that 10%, 15% and 15% weigtage will be given to Class X, Class XII and Graduation respectively. Earlier, 60% of weigtage were given to CAT score and 40% school passing marks.
