IIM Kozhikode Plans to Increase Women Intake for Better Gender Diversity

Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIMK) has decided to increase the number of seats for women in its postgraduate management programmes with an aim to better the gender diversity of the institute.

IIM Kozhikode is planning to increase the seats with an addition of 60 more for women candidates from the next academic year. According to a recent analysis and report, the number of women in the college has decreased since 2013.

The attempt is similar to the one initiated by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) early this year where they added around 8,000 seats for women in their undergraduate B.Tech programmes to encourage girl students to take up engineering courses in India. IIM Kozhikode is following the same steps as per the directions of the MHRD to improve the gender ratio in its campus.

Director and Professor at IIM-K, Mr. Debashis Chatterjee during an interview with a leading newspaper said that the institute aims to admit students from varied backgrounds and work experiences rather than just focusing on the numbers. Although the Common Admission Test (CAT) score will play a major role, but will not be the sole criteria for admissions in management level programmes at IIM.
