IIM Lucknow has made it clear that it will not be able to carry out academic support to IIM Sirmaur , located in Himachal Pradesh. IIM Lucknow had informed the latter about its decision in January 2018 stating the reason that it cannot provide academic support to both IIM Sirmaur and IIM Jammu .
Director of IIM Lucknow , Ajit Prasad said that it is difficult to support both the institutes with a limited number of faculty (i.e. 71 or 72) as they have to teach at IIM Lucknow, Noida Campus, IIM Jammu and IIM Sirmaur. The director also informed that he had asked IIM Sirmaur to build ties with other top b-schools in Chandigarh, IIM Rohtak , IIM Amritsar , IIM Kashipur and other IIMs to get academic assistance.
IIM Lucknow had been helping IIM Sirmaur for a year now providing close to 60% of the faculty needed to teach at the institute. The abrupt declaration to withdraw support from the next academic session has left the IIM Sirmaur in a complex situation. As a result, Director of IIM Sirmaur, Neelu Rohmetra, has asked the HRD Ministry to intervene in the matter.

The institute asked the ministry to persuade IIM Lucknow to continue its support. She also added that as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR) the mentor institute can extend support till 2021. Rohmetra is also seeking support from other top B-schools.
Each of the new IIMs is mentored by an older institute till the government appoints a Director. The older IIMs can continue to assist the new institutes in the league even after the appointment of the Directors. For example, more than half of the faculty at IIM Sambalpur is provided by IIM Indore .
