The first convocation ceremony of IIM Nagpur or Indian Institute of Management, Nagpur was held on April 14, 2017, at the auditorium of Visveswaraya National Institute of Technology . The Chief Guest for the occasion was Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Mr. Nitin Gadkari. Chairperson and Director of IIM Nagpur were also present on the occasion.
While delivering the convocation address, Mr. Nitin Gadkari indicated that IIM Nagpur should aim to become a global institute in the coming years. Earlier, the students belonging to the Nagpur region needed to go to Mumbai or Pune to pursue higher education in premier institutes. With the coming up of IIM Nagpur, the aspirants have an option to study in the institute that is closer to their locality.

On this occasion, Mr. Nitin Gadkari awarded PGP diplomas and scholastic medals to the students. He congratulated IIM Nagpur for completing the first batch with excellent placement percentage and salary packages.
Addressing the students, Chairperson of IIM Nagpur, Mr. C.P. Gurnani said that India is emerging as a major research hub for various reputed global technology firms like Apple, Uber, Microsoft and Google. Numerous job opportunities have been created due to this trend and there is a requirement for a highly skilled workforce almost at all levels.

Mr. Gurnani also revealed that E-Kranti and E-Governance are the two significant areas where software development companies of India can create 85 million indirect and 17 million direct jobs.
Indian Institute of Management, Nagpur started functioning in the year 2015 under the mentorship and guidance of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad .
