IIM Shillong Remembers The People’s President with Candlelight March

The Indian Institute of Management - IIM Shillong conducted a candlelight march in its campus to commemorate the day and to honour late APJ Abdul Kalam who breathed his last in the institute’s auditorium while developing a lecture.

IIM Shillong Candlelight March to Remember APJ Abdul Kalam

On Saturday, 27th July 2019, The Indian Institute of Management - IIM Shillong paid a tribute to the late former president of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam by organising a candlelight march on his fourth death anniversary. The march was held in the campus of IIM Shillong where the students, as well as the faculties, took part.

Hundreds of students, faculties and employees of IIM Shillong participated in the candlelight march held in the campus and also paid floral homage to the ‘Missile Man of India,’ Dr APJ Abdul Kalam who had suffered a cardiac arrest on the same day, 4 years ago while he was delivering a lecture to the students of IIM Shillong.

Prof Basav Roychoudhury, an associate professor of IIM Shillong told PTI that entire Shillong mourned on the day when the news of Kalam’s demise broke out. He added that the event of Dr Kalam’s death is considered very important among the people of Shillong and to commemorate the great personality, the institute organised the candle march.

Dr Abul Pakir Jainulabdin Abdul Kalam, popularly known as APJ Abdul Kalam, was born in a middle-class family in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. He was known as the missile man of India for his immense contribution in the scientific sector of India’s defence and space technology sectors. He was the 11th President of India and was popular with the name of ‘People’s President’ for his down to earth nature and vast wisdom in various fields of science. He was in charge of the presidential office from 2002 to 2007.

The great personality, on 27th July 2015, fell down on the floor of IIM Shillong due to a cardiac arrest while delivering an inspirational lecture to the students. His demise is considered as a national loss in the history of India.
