Meghalaya Governor and CM along with students released balloons to mark the 85th birth anniversary of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in Shillong
IIM Shillong honoured former late President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam on his 85th birth anniversary by setting up the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research and Analysis at the institute.
To materialise the centre, a tripartite MoU was signed by the North Eastern Council (NEC), the DoNER ministry, and the Indian Institute of Management-Shillong.

Dr Kalam breathed his last at IIM-Shillong while addressing students at the campus last year 2015. IIM-Shillong is the only B-school approved by the Union HRD ministry in the northeast till now.
Present on the occasion were several dignitaries like -
- Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan
- Chief Minister Mukul Sangma
- Ram Muivah, Secretary of NEC
- Naveen Verma, Secretary of DoNER
- Host of other dignitaries
A spokesman of IIM Shillong said that the day started with a brainstorming session involving students, dignitaries and faculty members. The agenda of the session was how to come up with solutions to problems in the field of horticulture, especially in the northeast and how the new Centre for Policy Research and Analysis can help.

The Meghalaya CM highlighted the need for a platform so that it can function as an aggregator for ideas. While the Governor Shanmuganathan said that the day also marked the first anniversary of Nurturing Minds which the institute began on October 15, 2015, in memory of the late president. It is meant to spread his message and promote his teachings.
The institute aimed at reaching out to 60 children from seven schools in Shillong. IIT Shillong conducted a plethora of activities on the occasion such as-
- Games and sports for the students
- Short movie on Dr Kalam
- Eye check-up camp
