Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER), Pune , has announced to start Ph.D. programmes for international students. The programmme will be offered in six subjects – Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Mathematics, Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) and Earth and Climate Sciences (ECS). The course will be two-year doctoral research programme called i-Ph.D. The Ph.D. programmes will start form the next academic year.
The institution is all set to recruit students from abroad and allow them to undertake i-Ph.D. research in India. The international students will be allowed to work in the laboratories and will also get the opportunity to attempt and solve research problems. Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research intends to highlight the programme by raising the profile of the institution internationally and by hosting international students. Dean of Doctoral Studies Girish Ratnaparkhi said that the international students recruited will add plus points to the existing Ph.D. programmes and will also make it healthier and stronger.
More international students will now be attracted to the educational hub, Pune, for their higher studies. This is possible because of the introduction of Ph.D. programmes by IISER. The institution has planned to use its previous experience of hosting international conference and related exchange programmes with international students and faculty, before starting preparation of coursework for i-Ph.D.

The i-Ph.D. courses’ curriculum will consist of materials of both doctorate and masters degrees in one integrated programme accompanied with research projects for a better presentation by the international students on Indian research topics.
Core subjects combined with research works would be focused on, for first four semesters. Doctoral research projects will later be followed in the curriculum. International students will be awarded dual degrees of Master of Science and a Ph.D. after the successful completion of the course.
The present faculties of Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research will be research guides for i-Ph.D. students. The availability of the seat for the Ph.D. programmes will be decided by IISER and not by the limits of the departments. The institution will not support students with stipends and fellowships hence the students with scholarships are encouraged to apply.

The international students will be a part of the existing collaborative initiatives of the institution added Girish Ratnaparkhi and said that the international students will get chances to interact and work other national level institutions during their doctoral course.
