IIT Bhubaneswar to Offer 22 Supernumerary Seats for Female Candidates

IIT Bhubaneswar to Offer 22 Supernumerary Seats for Female Candidates

With a motive to bridge the gender gap in engineering education and provide equal access to female students, IIT Bhubaneswar will offer 22 supernumerary seats for aspiring female candidates. The additional 22 seats (supernumerary) in B.Tech courses will be offered from the upcoming academic session 2018-19. With the addition of 22 supernumerary seats, the seats in B.Tech courses at IIT Bhubaneswar will be increased from 350 to 372.

Director of IIT Bhubaneswar , Mr. RV Raja Kumar revealed that the number of female students joining IITs is very low. Therefore, with an aim to encourage more women to join IITs, HRD Ministry has given approval for 22 additional seats for women students under supernumerary quota. At present, only 8% female candidates are enrolled in B.Tech courses at IIT Bhubaneswar, he pointed.

Recently, the central government prepared a detailed plan to improve the percentage of female students in IITs to 14%. With the increase of women students to 14% at IIT Bhubaneswar, over 6% increase will be affected.

The selection of female students under supernumerary quota will be based on JEE merit. After filling 350 seats, the admission process for 22 supernumerary seats will begin. The women candidates will be granted admission rank-wise. The premier institute further confirmed that the number of seats available for boys will not be affected due to the inclusion of supernumerary seats . The additional seats have been added to attract more women to the premier institutes .

For the 22 supernumerary seats, the reservation provisions for OBC, SC and ST will be applicable. Generally, there is no reservation for women candidates for seeking admission into IITs.
