As per the official HRD Ministry data, IIT Bombay has been successful in generating highest revenue through patents, consultancy, inventions and research in the last three years. Among all the IITs, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras and IIT Delhi bagged the top three spots in terms of revenue generation.
A senior official of HRD Ministry confirmed that there is no relationship between the annual budget allocated to IITs by the Ministry in the form of GIA (Grants-in-Aid) and revenue generated by them. The Ministry grants GIA for the development of infrastructure and for the recurring expenses such as administrative expenses, pensions, fellowships and salaries. On the other hand, the revenue generated by the premier engineering institutes depends on research, inventions, patents filed by the institute and consultancy projects, he added.
