It seems like Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay has plans to reposition itself as a university in the coming years. The statement is apt as the varsity is going to diversify its portfolio by offering courses in filmmaking, fine arts and economics. Currently, the varsity has been working consistently to attract international students and faculty to boost global rankings. However, it needs well-developed infrastructure and research facilities which need appropriate funding.

One of the officials explained that a course in Economics might come into effect from the next academic session and some other courses like Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics, Management, Biology and Earth Science are in the designing process. The institute will also launch Master’s degree in Film Making and Fine Arts. IIT-B will also launch Ph.D. in Policy Studies in the coming years.

He further explained that the institute is trying to realise its objectives which are a part of ‘Vision 2021’. New academic programmes might come into effect in the next four years. The institute will also develop the curriculum of existing courses apart from introducing the new courses.
IIT Bombay is planning to enhance the student experience by putting smaller batches in classrooms as well as allocating hostel rooms to each student. The institute also has plans to provide individual accommodation zones to married couples. However, the institutes need funds, and it has to rely on donations made by alumni and funds earned through research activities taken up by the faculty.
