IIT Bombay Urges Recruiters to Streamline Placement Process

The Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) department at IIT Bombay has urged the recruiters from IT sector to streamline the process of placement talks and tests before the commencement of final interviews in December. Professors of CSE department pointed out that the placement activities spread over three months is affecting the teaching and research patterns of final year students. Therefore, the department has come up with a slew of suggestions with regard to placement tests.

Suggestions Made by IIT Bombay CSE Department to IT Recruiters:

The following are the important suggestions made by CSE Department of IIT Bombay to IT recruiters regarding placement talks and placement tests: -

• The number of pre-placement talks must be limited.
• The recruiters should encourage and implement audio-recorded pre-placement talks for students. The move will enable repeat listening.
• PPTs (PowerPoint Presentations) should be held on selected weekends.
• The number of screening tests and the duration of the same should be limited.
• Companies that conduct screening tests must not back out from interviews.
• Companies participating in placements must submit their questions associated with placement talks to the CSE Department. The department will further collate the questions and proctor the tests.
• The CSE Department will grade the students based on the questions that interest companies.
• The placement tests conducted by the participating companies should not exceed one hour.
• Students hired/ selected by various companies should not be invited to take part in company events before completion of academic sessions.

Every year, students end up taking a large number of tests. On the other hand, toppers, who are hired by companies in the first attempt, appear in multiple tests. For instance, it is unusual for a student to attend 40 placement tests and talks that amount to 120 hours of time. Due to this pressure or overload, overall academic performance and research output of students during the ongoing semester is seriously affected.

CSE Department Head, Uday Khedkar indicated that institute could not direct students not to take part in placement tests. Students join IIT Bombay expecting good placements, and the premier institute has been successful in offering satisfactory placements. However, there is a need to streamline the existing placement process so that the academic performance of students should not be affected, he highlighted.
