IIT Delhi New Department of Design to Offer Minor Courses in 2018

On November 2, 2017, the administration of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi announced that it would establish or set up a Department of Design to churn out designers who would play a vital role in synthesising new technologies with aesthetics. These technologies will be useful for manoeuvring the final product.

On August 4, 2017, Board of Governors (BoG) of IIT Delhi gave their approval to set up a Department of Design and approval has been granted for the same by the Senate of IIT Delhi . However, a decision has not yet been taken by the committees regarding the Instrument Design and Development Centre.

The department will start offering minor courses from this year in order to bring technology hand-in-hand with aesthetics and ergonomics. The department will also start offering bachelors, masters and Ph.D. courses from next year.

Director of IIT Delhi , Mr. Ramgopal Rao explained that design can be quite productive in understanding the uses of the final product. For instance, if person ‘A’ is making a bomb detection device, he must clearly understand the mechanism of the device, placement of buttons on the device and how a person can hold it. He also added that designers can not only conduct an abstract exercise but also play an instrumental role in making the final product un-clumsy.

The establishment of the Design Department has let the institute in a conundrum as it has not yet decided what will be done with the Instrument Design and Development Centre . It is the only centre that offers research in the field of instrument technology other than IISc Bangalore . The department is also responsible for developing and managing the mechanism of T72 tank as well as electronic voting machines . The centre is currently not functional and admissions for this year have also not been advertised.
