IIT-Gn Student & Faculty Team Inspect Army Base Camps in Gujarat & Rajasthan

A team of students and faculty of Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar visited Indian Army camps in Gujarat and Rajasthan between February 4 and 8, 2017.
IIT-Gn Student & Faculty Team Inspect Army Base Camps in Gujarat & Rajasthan

Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Indian Army and Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) signed last year to carry forward research activities on the difficulties faced by forces of Indian Army, a team of students and faculty of IIT Gandhinagar visited Indian Army camps in Gujarat and Rajasthan between February 4 and 8, 2017.

Visiting team members included -

  • Professor Shivkumar Jolad, Assistant Professor of Physics in IIT-Gn
  • Hemant K Verma, an M.Tech (Electrical Engineering) student
  • Parth Upadhyay, a student of Ph.D. in Electrical engineering

The team members visited Army base camps in Longewala, Jaisalmer, Kutch and Barmer to access the problems faced by the army personnel in extreme weather conditions.

A statement from the IIT stated that the Indian Army had conducted the familiarization visit for industry and academia in the difficult border areas of the desert & the Rann of Kutch. This aimed to divulge the industry and academia to their problems at the ground level and help the Amry find out its solutions.

Professor Jolad, said that the institute is exploring solutions to different problems such as poor quality night-vision cameras, heavy uniforms, tanks that get stuck in marshy areas. The institute is very excited to solve the problems of the Army that they face in extreme weather of 50°C during the summer times and 0°C during the winter period. Army personnel had to perform their duty in extreme condition for about 72 hours without any pause. The Amry desperately needs solutions to their problems and the faculty of the institute would like to solve their difficulties.
