IIT Graduates Face Hardship as Campus Hiring Comes Down to 66%

This year, out of every three graduates from IITs either did not find a suitable job or were not suitable for a job during the campus placements. According to sources, the placements at IITs have been shrinking, and only 66% of students managed to secure a job in campus placements during the academic session 2016-17.

During the year 2015-16, the placement percentage at IITs was 79 percent. Compared to the previous year, there was a drastic decline in the number of the students placed. According to the data of HRD Ministry, only 6,013 students secured jobs out of 9,104 students in 17 IITs.

However, the officials of HRD Ministry justified that the number of offers made by Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) has increased this year. PSUs recruited the candidates who have a valid GATE score, and all of them were IITians. However, these numbers will not reflect in the campus recruitment numbers. Therefore, it is better to add these numbers and figure out the conclusions. The ministry is of the opinion that the employment scenario is not shrinking in IITs, and it is stable.

One of the experts revealed that the decline in the percentage of placements is due to the impact of economic downturn globally. Most of the renowned companies and organisations slashed the jobs between November 2016 and January 2017 to protect their profits. Demonetization also had a negative impact on these companies. Therefore, the employment opportunities have been reduced.

One of the officials of an IIT revealed that the companies visiting IITs have increased. However, there is no any increase in the number of employment opportunities. This year, the number of startups that took part in the campus placements was also less.
