New IIT Guwahati Director Envisions Extension Plans for The Institution

The new director of IIT Guwahati, T G Sitharam has envisioned many additions that he wishes to bring to the engineering institution. Among the additions, introducing extension centres as well as bringing more PG programmes to attract both domestic and international students are included.

New IIT Guwahati Director Envisions Extension Plans for The Institution

As none of the first steps taken by the new Director of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT-G) , T G Sitharam has planned to establish extension centres as part of his vision to expand the institution’s influence to the other parts of the Northeast. T G Sitharam had taken charge as the new Director of IIT Guwahati and announced the plans to the media on 5th July 2019. Sitharam, however, stated that in order to make the plan come to life, proper permissions need to be taken from the authorities, i.e. the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

In a statement made by Sitharam, he said that the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has already been able to make a name for itself over the years of its existence along with creating a name for itself in the top Global Universities. He added that the institute has developed its campus to hold state of the art infrastructure and facilities for engineering and scientific purposes. Stating these, he added that IIT-G is capable of providing help to the state governments of the northeastern states in coming up with solutions for different problems that are faced by them.

He also stated that the plan is to expand the reach of the institution among the people of the northeastern states. However, that requires them to ask for permission to do so. To which he made a commitment of working towards making the plan come to life. Sources also stated that TG Sitharam has come up with a vision of making IIT Guwahati among the top 100 Institutions globally in the span of the next 5 years.

Sitharam told sources that one of the drawbacks that are faced by the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is the dearth in the number of International students as well as faculties at the institutions. He stated that this problem should be fixed with the introduction of postgraduate programmes such as Master’s as well PhD programmes at the institution. He further adds that the addition of these programmes will help to capture the interest of the students in BIMSTEC and SAARC countries in the future.

Among the other changes that he wishes to bring forth in IIT Guwahati include the possibilities in introducing joint PhD programmes with other IITs in India ensuring that the faculty interests are matched along with using the national facilities available to them. He added that since IIT Guwahati is close to the region of Seismic Zone V, they will establish a centre for disaster preparedness as well. He also envisions in teaching the students as well as the faculties of IIT Guwahati lessons and classes in self-control and discipline through Yoga and Meditation camps at the campus.
