IIT Hyderabad Programme Encourages 35 Girl Students to Pursue STEM Careers

IIT Hyderabad Programme Encourages 35 Girl Students to Pursue STEM Careers

In order to encourage more number of girls to take up a career in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) , the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IITH) is organizing Vigyan Jyothi . It is a two-week residential training programme which includes lectures, seminars, hands-on sessions, business quiz, students outing, yoga, personality development, expert talks, training sessions, newspaper reading etc.

During the programme, students will visit various laboratories such as material science, robotics, physics, chemistry, 3D printing in order to get training and gain knowledge about them.

The two-week residential programme has started from 12 May 2018 and is providing training to 35 meritorious girls. Prof UB Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad spoke about the importance of the programme. She added that girls must participate in technology development and that this workshop offered by the Teaching and Learning Center at IIT-H will work towards achieving gender parity in the engineering profession.

The programme is funded by the department of science and technology, the government of India. Apart from offering technological knowledge and training, the course will also offer with mental and physical fitness, personal health, resilience, improvising communication skills, hygiene and exposure.

Vigan Jyothi Scholars program is focusing on a key issue, that is to expand female employment and interest in STEM courses . They want to balance the ratio as the female interest in computer science and the STEM is not going as it was planned.
