Various initiatives were taken to prevent the students who were joining the IITs to study M.Tech or IIMs from leaving their study mid-way which has resulted in a significant decline in the number of dropouts from these institutions.

Decreasing Number of IITs and IIMs dropouts

A significant decline in the number of dropouts from IIMs and IITs and other Institutions of national repute has been observed in the last five years. The rate of dropouts in the Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) was around 2.25 per cent in the academic year 2015-16 which has come down to 0.68 per cent in 2019-20. Similarly, these numbers have come down to 0.78 per cent from 1.04 per cent in 2015-16.

According to Ramesh Pokhriyal, HRD minister, these numbers are indicative of the corrective measures which were taken to minimise the rate of dropouts. V Ramgopal Rao, the Director of IIT Delhi believes that among various other steps that were taken to minimise the dropout rates, peer-supported learning, English Language, better campus placements and professional courses classes have played a significant role. Those who could not score good marks, a special doubt clearing session was organised where the institute seniors helped their juniors.

To combat the issue of PG-level dropouts, a suggestion regarding the formation of a Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAP) was suggested where the GATE-based admission process was to be centralized. This system effectively dealt with the increasing number of PG level dropouts in institutes like IIT Madras by connecting the COAP to the Institute, candidates and PSUs. Since this model was implemented in 2018 in IIT-M, not a single M.Tech student has dropped out.

The COAP portal has also helped the institute, students and recruiters come to the same page. An offer letter is submitted by the recruiter and the students can revert within a particular time period through the COAP portal.
