The Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kanpur is working to set up a lab for advanced learning of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) . The labs in IIT Kanpur will be utilised for teaching and conducting research on these advanced topics as claimed by Mahindra Agrawal, the deputy director of IIT Kanpur.
The deputy director who is also a professor at the Computer Science and Engineering department at the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kanpur said that the proposal was at the discussion stage for a while and will be finalised soon by the institute. The deputy director cum professor informed that there was already a presence of these courses such as AI related topics in the IIT Kanpur campus and the courses were very popular among the students. He expressed his hope that the new specialisations of these streams will be attractive and influential to students to take admissions.
Last year with the help of a central cyber-security agency, the institute introduced a course on Blockchain Architecture in the campus. For the betterment of E-Governance systems, the Office of the National Cyber Security Coordinator came forward to finance the Blockchain Architecture Programme. The project was headed by Mahindra Agrawal and Sandip Shukla who is another IIT Kanpur faculty member.
According to a research firm, Itihaasa, India ranks at the third position globally for the number of research publication on Artificial Intelligence technologies. The rank list of Itihaasa is topped by the United States and China respectively, though India came third, statistical data shows that the amount of research publications generated in India for AI Technologies is far less in number than China and US. The quality of Research products and output is very less on AI technologies in India. For that reason, India ranks 5th in the list in terms of citation analysis criteria.
The government think-tank NITI Ayog in a recent report has said that the incorporation and Development of Artificial Intelligence technologies in India can add more than USD $1 Trillion in the GDP of the Indian Union.
