IIT Kanpur , La Trobe - Australia and BITS Pilani have joined hands to work on a project - Asian Smart Cities Reseach Networks. The project focuses on the structure & lifestyle of cities and people living in it. To work on the research project, 50 students from each of these universities will be selected that would work on the project objectives.
After observing the condition of smart cities, 10 core sectors of research were defined by experts, the most popular ones are:
- Internet of Things (IoT)
- Cybersecurity
- Artificial Intelligence (AI)
- Cultural Heritage
A fund of approximately 65 crores has been raised by the educational institutes to facilitate the research and according to sources, 12 cooperate companies working with similar objectives will be contributing more funds for the programme.

PhD in Smart City Focus
The Smart City programme focuses on the following -
- Sustainable Cities
- Liveable Cities
- Brighter Cities
According to John Dewar, Vice-Chancellor of La Trobe, the students will be engaged in solving problems faced by the people of cities by working closely with them. Students have to interact with people working at different places from industries to offices to collect information as it is a community-driven project.
The total intake for the programme would be 70, including students and academic staff. Indian students interested in participating may apply for the same as the official advertisements for the same is released. The programme will be considering the cities of India and each student will be guided by the La Trobe guide and a faculty representative from Indian Universities.
