Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur celebrated its Foundation Day in a grand style on November 2, 2016. The institute was established in the year 1959 and was registered as a society. Secretary of Higher Education, Mr. Vinaysheel Oberi attended the event as the Chief Guest. Ajit Prasad, Director of Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow was the Guest of Honour.
On this occasion, a research park was launched by the Chief Guest. Sameer Khandekar, Professor at IIT-K, designed the research park which will be set up on the campus. Indranil Manna, Director of IIT-K, awarded seven alumni of the institute with Alumnus Awards. The director also honoured three distinguished professors who were associated with IIT-K. Mr. K.M. Abraham, an alumnus of the institute, was awarded the prestigious Satyendra K Dubey Memorial Award.

The seven distinguished alumni who were awarded Alumnus Award were:-
- Arvind Pradhan (1974 batch)
- Sanjiva K Lele (1980 batch)
- Prabhat Singh (1980 batch)
- Anurag Kumar (1977 batch)
- Vishnu Agarwal (1966 batch)
- Ram S Sharma (1977 batch)
- Uday B Desai (1974 batch)
The recipients of these awards are former students of IIT-K who are working at high positions in their respective fields. The alumni extended their full support to the institute.
The celebrations were held in the auditorium of the institute. Senior faculty members were also present on the occasion.
The institute has been performing well in all aspects. Recently, IIT-K organised the annual fest ‘Antarangni’. Students from almost 50 colleges across the country participated in various competitions and contributed to it being a grand success. The major highlight of the fest was ‘Kavisammelanam’ in which various poets, research scholars and teachers recited their poems.
