With the association of Mehta Family Foundation based in the United States, the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kanpur will be setting up an engineering centre focused on medicine. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between Mr Rahul Mehta of Mehta Foundation and the director of IIT Kanpur, Prof Abhay Karandikar.
Solving the challenging problem in medical sector through engineering is the prime focus behind setting up the Mehta Family Centre for Engineering in Medicine, informed Prof Karandikar. He added that this centre will be the first of a kind and IIT Kanpur will be the pioneer in the sector of Manpower as it will cater to both medical and engineering fields. In terms of work and researches, the centre is set to be the first of its kind interdisciplinary centre.
Mr Rahul Mehta of TMFF expressed his gratitude for getting a chance to collaborate with IIT Kanpur. He, expressing his joy, said that the institute has become one of the pioneers of science-based engineering education in India with many credits.
Prof Shankar Subramaniam, who is also the visiting professor of IIT Kanpur’s Biological Sciences and Bioengineering BSBE (biomedical research) department said that the new centre of Engineering in Medicine has the potential to be the crown jewel of IIT Kanpur which is already one of the leading technological institutes in India. The institute is not only training a generation of students but also will be the pioneer to build a workforce to revolutionise the medical sector in India with quality engineering skills.

Molecular Medicine and Engineering, Regenerative Medicine, and Digital Medicine are set as the primary focus of research in the IIT Kanpur’s new centre as of now. The reason behind choosing these three sectors is they are emerging as the possibility to revolutionise the medical sector in future not only in India but on a global scale.

The centre will work in harmony with all the departments of IIT Kharagpur for catering to the needs of medical research through engineering under Biological Sciences and Bioengineering BSBE (biomedical research) department. This will help to diversify the areas of research in the near future.
The centre is visioning to produce the new generations of interdisciplinary leaders in the sector of medicine and making a positive impact on India’s medicine practices with technology.
