IIT Kanpur, Startup Incubation and Innovation Centre (SIIC), the technology business incubator signed MoU with the Defence Innovation Organisation. The MoU was signed on April 22, 2022, to support research and innovation in various fields such as Sensor Systems, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Autonomous Unmanned Systems, Advanced Imaging, Big Data Analytics, and Secured Communication. The IIT Kanpur and DIO have collaborated to form a flagship program, iDEX-Prime (Innovation for Defence Excellence). iDEX-Prime will provide its support for the INR 10 crore start-ups across various domains.
The event was conducted at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi in the presence of the Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh. Other members that participated in the event were Co-PIC, Innovation and Incubation, IIT Kanpur, Professor Ankush Sharma; COO, SIIC, IIT Kanpur, Mr. Piyush Mishra; Manager-Bio Programs, Mr. Jatin Mishra; and Assistant Manager, Mr. Keshav Pareek.

With the grant of INR 10 Crores, the iDEX-Prime program was launched with six problem statements from Armed Forces to find a resolution through innovations and start-ups. These challenges laid out are:
- To develop an Al-based Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) for identifying and marking mines in a minefield.
- To develop Signals Intelligence System for Hilly Terrain and High-Altitude Area
- To develop an Automated Celestial Navigation system
- To develop Advanced Truss Bridges
- To develop 11m ‘all electric’ Work Boat
- To make Expendable Active Decoys
Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur, comments on the event of the MoU signing that this partnership of IIT Kanpur with Defence Innovation Organisation will escalate the infrastructure, research, and development in the defence sector, by truly contributing to the notion of “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.

The iDEX-Prime will contribute to making the armed forces of India self-sufficient and technologically forward. The Ministry of Defence formulated and approved the program to institutionalize small start-ups and innovators who are competent, flexible, and adaptable to extend their capabilities to the Indian Armed Forces in innovation and research for technological solutions.
