According to an announcement made by IIT-Kharagpur , the institute will be introducing Smart Energy Management System on its campus. The announcement was made on Thursday, January 12, 2017. With this move, IIT Kharagpur plans to enhance the efficiency of energy management and promote energy conservation.
According to the an official press-release, this initiative will help the institute to manage the mounting electricity bills that are an issue for all big institutes. It also added that the system has the ability to connect all electric appliances from anywhere in the world and works through internet connection. The system enables to reduce the cost to one tenth of the other alternates in the market.

Initially, Smart Switch Modules will be installed in the hostel named Meghnad Saha Hall-two blocks. Other areas that have been approved for installation are Nalanda Academic Complex that will soon get a Wireless MCB Controller. Wireless AC Controllers will also be installed in the offices and quarters.
The cost of installation of Smart Switch Modules will be Rs.50,000 for a 2BHK apartment as compared to the market price of Rs.5 lakh.
The appliance can be controlled by the user from any location through a smartphone app named Alive Home. The app will also allow the users to access real time data of energy consumed by the appliances. Users will also be able to schedule the use of the appliances according to their need, enabling them to save energy.

With the help of this project, IIT-Kharagpur will become the first Indian campus to have installed Smart Energy Management System. Apart from controlling the electricity consumption, the system will also curbs carbon footprint at macro level.
