According to sources, all the major automobile companies are working with three institutes to build self-driving cars.

Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay , Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur have joined hands to work on driverless solutions or autonomous vehicle solutions. The project taken up by these three technological institutes has been evoking interest from top Indian automotive companies.

Debashish Chakravarty, Head of Autonomous Ground Vehicle (AGV) at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur revealed that they are working consistently to develop technology for driverless cars considering Indian market, which is a contrast to global tech majors, which are playing a significant role in building and testing technologies in the Western market.

According to sources, all the major automobile companies are working with three institutes to build self-driving cars. On the other hand, the federal government was planning to amend motor vehicle laws to facilitate testing of driverless or self-driving cars. These amended laws will pave the way for local companies to join the global race.

Currently, some of the students at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur are testing autonomous vehicles, which are built from scratch. All these vehicles were built within the campus.

Similarly, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur also has plans to build an autonomous vehicle. Prof. Gaurav Pandey along with some students of IIT Kanpur will play a significant role in building the autonomous vehicle. It has been learnt that Prof. Gaurav left his job at an autonomous vehicle research group in US-based Ford Motors and joined as a faculty member at IIT Kanpur in 2015.

Prof. Ankit Sharma of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay revealed that they are working on the driverless technology. He indicated that if they have a solution that works in India, it will work anywhere in the world. Currently, the students of IIT Bombay are carrying out a pilot test of autonomous vehicle within the campus.
