Two interconnected android apps have been developed by the students of the Indian Institute of Technology - IIT Kharagpur to help elderly people to reach out to geriatrics anytime.
The app works by connecting caregivers to the elderly. The Artificial Intelligence (AI) based application was developed by a 2nd Year Interdisciplinary B.Tech batch. The app has been named,’Care4U.’ The app will look after the elderly people and the caregivers install the app developed differently for them. Two of the apps will be connected and work together to connect both the ends.
On the efficiency of the app, one statement from IIT Kharagpur has said that a 'neural network-based fall detection algorithm has been incorporated in the app'. The algorithm can sense if the elderly person has fallen and needs assistance. The app will automatically reach out to the caregiver with the location for making the caregiver able to reach the place of the incident quickly.
Another feature of the app is the emotion tracking by face detection technology. The app can analyse the mood and the mental health status of an elderly person by calculating the facial expressions from a photo. The team has designed a chatbot to talk to the elderly to make this feature more effective. A team member, Kanishka Haldar (Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering ) has said that the chatbot is designed to fine-tune its conversation with the person by recognising their moods. Depending upon it, the chatbot can give the person a motivating quote or an old song the person might like at that time.

The app has a medicine reminder which can remind to take certain medicines in time to the elderly person and also to the caregiver associated with them. The Care4U app got the recognition of the first runner up at the nationwide hackathon ‘vesAIthon'19.’
