IIT Kharagpur released a statement on Friday, August 18, 2017, stating that a genomics laboratory facility will soon be started for students of all branches of engineering. The purpose of the laboratory will be to teach life science to all students.
The lab will provide facility for microscopy-based observation, bioinformatics, protein structure, molecular biology and function study. From the third year onwards, students will also be given the change to conduct research under the mentorship of faculty members belonging to related fields.
The lab, once started, will be operational for 24 hours throughout the academic sessions and will comprise all the necessary equipment required for running for sequencing facility, cell and molecular biology, microscopy facility, biochemistry, etc.
Sudip K. Ghosh, Biotechnology Department, IIT Kharagpur, said that this lab will be the first of its kind in India, however, some of the abroad universities comprise labs of similar nature.
The institute has also signed up with Tata Medical Centre for encouraging education, research and outreach programmes in interdisciplinary medical research and other such fields.

The objective of the collaboration is to encourage interaction between the medical professionals, faculty and students of the two institutes. This collaboration will also promote joint research under the supervision of experts.
The institute will also start integrated M.Sc.-Ph.D. courses that will promote medical physics, molecular medical microbiology and nuclear medicine.

This programme which will collaboratively be developed and monitored by both the institutions and the degree, will be awarded by IIT Kharagpur.
