IIT Kharagpur law school has started a Legal Aid and IP Facilitation Cell to provide legal services with the one in need and spread awareness about the same. The cell also wishes to impart knowledge about legal matters and enable legal literacy . As per the statement issued by IIT Kharagpur, students and faculty of the law school associated with the legal cell will provide legal aid to the marginalised strata of the society.
Professor Padmavati M. Dean of the Law School stated that timely legal advice may lead to early resolution of many cases. It is witnessed that a lot of times elderly people of the poor section of the society are dispossessed of his/her property by his/her son. In such cases, timely legal advice can act as a big advantage and help those who are not aware of their legal rights.

The cell will also provide assistance on cyber crimes and issues and how to handle such cases regarding the protection of indigenous crafts and other areas extensive knowledge regarding intellectual property rights will be needed. The legal aid cell will also administer the IP Facilitation and Legal Aid Camp on every Saturday to offer help and assistance to those who need it.

The cell also plans to go online in order to provide legal assistance and help to the masses. The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law was set up in the year 2006 with the objective of building engineers and scientists in the domain of Intellectual Property Lawyers.
