In an announcement made by IIT-Kharagpur on 4 July, the institute revealed that a "Centre for Science of Happiness" will soon be started on campus. The centre is being will be founded with the aim to help students lead a happy life and embrace happiness. Research related to the field will also be conducted at the centre.

Satinder Singh Rekhi is the face of this new initiative and is helping build the centre. The centre will be named after him. Shedding more light on this new centre, IIT Kharagpur officials said that the 'Rekhi Centre for Science of Happiness' will work on creating "happy technocrats".
The purpose of establishing this centre is to help students in developing an environment of meaningful life, well-being, happiness, holistic self-development and positive growth. The process will include healthy interactions among students, faculty members and campus community, as told by Damodar Suar, the person in charge of the complete management of the centre.

In years to come courses in this field will also be introduced in the institute. Research and training associated with the science of happiness will also be conducted to explore the field further.
Damodar Suar also informed that the first global workshop on the science of happiness will be conducted in August 2016.
