IIT Kharagpur has allocated a grant of Rs. 10 crores for renovating and upgrading the college’s sports infrastructure and amenities as they are to host the Inter-IIT Sports Meet in 2019. This grant of Rs. 10 crore, is in addition to the annual sports budget of Rs. 1.5 crore.
IIT Kharagpur will come up with two synthetic courts for tennis, volleyball, and basketball. They will also be setting up an athletic track, food court and an indoor stadium for the sports meet. Even though the institute already has a swimming pool, a ground for cricket and football, multiple courts for volleyball, tennis, and basketball.

William Mohanty said that the initiative for introducing new sports facilities is to promote overall wellness. As sports tends to inculcate the qualities such as leadership and helps channelize the surplus energy in right manner. It also inculcates decision making power into the minds of individuals.
Tennis has received lots of positive response and has become very popular among students in IIT Kharagpur. US-based alumnus Vinod Gupta inviting T J Hyman, the coach of ace player Leander Peas for a training programme at IITKGP for the students. TJ Hyman will start the new training programme from January 2018, which will provide players with ample time to practice and prepare for IIT Inter Sports Meet.

IIT Inter Sports Meet 2017 for students and staff is to be held in December in Chennai. In all 23 IITs will participate in the meet in 13 different categories. The host for the meet will be IIT-Delhi.
