A new full-time M.Tech program on ‘Safety, Health and Environment’ is going to be launched at IIT Kharagpur by its associate department of Mining Engineering . The course will deal with new safety technologies and hazard management in the mining industry.
Prof. Debasis Deb who is the HOD of the Mining department expressed his concern that in India it is thought that safety is someone else's concern whereas safety in mines is the need of the hour currently in India. He said the course will help develop safer mining practices in the near future.
CMD of National Minerals Development Corporation (NMDC), Bijendra Kumar said the new course will help ensure new technology for the industry to thrive. With the intake capacity of 11, the course will start in July 2019.

IIT Kharagpur has always been an active part of innovation in its campuses. It has also started courses based on artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship development, data science and many more last year. The Institute is one of the highest reputed institutes in terms of innovation and development. The department is also looking forward to launching an M.Tech programme for Geomechanics for Mineral and Energy Resources.
IIT Kharagpur will also establish some more research centres in Kolkata and coastal areas of West Bengal for multiple research purposes such as minerals and minings.
