The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur is set to make some revolutionary changes in the field of medical technology education. With its School of Medical Science and Technology, IIT Kharagpur is planning to launch new courses from the upcoming academic year.
The information was made public through a statement issued by the institute on Sunday, April 29, 2018. The statement added that the aim of launching these programmes is to impart training to researchers and students regarding medical science and engineering.
The new courses have been designed for individuals who seek careers in the field of medical technology and instrumentation. One of the new courses that will be launched by IIT Kharagpur will be M.Tech in Biomedical Engineering i.e. a 2-year programme.

School of Medical Science and Technology at IIT KGP already offers a unique 3-year programme named Masters in Medical Science and Technology. The programmes invites MBBS graduates and doctors to impart education and training in the field of medical technology .
The school is going to start an integrated MSc-PhD programme in collaboration with the Tata Medical Center, Kolkata from the up-coming academic session. The focus of the programme will be molecular medical microbiology , medical physics and nuclear medicine.
Prof Suman Chakraborty, the Head of the School of Medical Science and Technology, talked about the programmes and said that these courses would bridge the gap between medicine, engineering and biological sciences and will help in producing world-class scientists.

Apart from these new courses, IIT Kharagpur is also in the process of establishing a 400-bed super speciality hospital . The hospital is likely to be operational by 2019.
