In an attempt to familiarise the students with the campus, departments and faculty, IIT Kharagpur will be starting a nine-day Induction Programme for freshers. The induction course will be starting from July 2017.
Director of IIT Kharagpur, Prof P P Chakrabarti talked about the induction and informed that the programme will also comprise interactive sessions where they will be encouraged to talk about their career choices, aspirations, academic options, etc.
The Director also added that students usually enter the institute with preconceived ideas regarding the discipline they have opted for and its scope. This often creates some misconceptions regarding the career opportunities that the disciplines will offer, the director added.
Chakrabarti also informed that most of the students are also not aware of IIT Kharagpur’s flexibility that allows them to pursue other subjects that they wish to study apart from the discipline they have picked. Students can pick subjects on the basis of their interest even those that are not related to their field.

The Director said that interaction with the students will help the faculty understand the preferences of students and guiding them in picking up minors, micro-credits or micro-specialisations according to their interest and skill. The induction programme will also be an appropriate platform to introduce fresher students to their hallmates and classmates.
IIT Kharagpur is also planning to organise refurbishing programmes throughout the year instead of sticking to the single induction programme pattern. An assimilation programme has also been introduced for students of the second year that will be aimed to introduce departments and academics.

Third-year students will also get a reorientation programme regarding the career choices and pathways that are open for them. In the fourth year, the students will be given a de-induction programme that will prepare them for the industry and the world beyond college.
