IIT Kharagpur’s Professor Gets Prestigious 'DRDO Technology Leadership Award'

IIT Kharagpur’s Professor Gets Prestigious 'DRDO Technology Leadership Award'

Dr. Manas K Mandal, one of the visiting faculty members at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur has been awarded the prestigious ‘Technology Leadership Award’ by Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO. He received the award from Mr. Arun Jaitley, Finance Minister on March 24, 2017.

Previously, Dr. Manas K Mandal served as a scientist and Director General (Life Sciences) at Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). He joined DRDO in the year 2004. Dr. Manas made a significant contribution to military psychology for IAF or Indian Armed Forces.

Currently, he is working as a visiting professor in the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He is also associated with Rekhi Centre for Happiness (as an advisor) at IIT-Kgp.

Speaking about motivation training, Dr. Manas explained that motivation training is a scientific process and only the experts in the field should impart it. Imperceptibly with reason is the first step in the training process followed by emotion. The training is not given merely though pep talk or learning to tolerate frustration, but also with having the capability to bounce back.

Dr. Manas expressed that there is a temporary relevance to the motivation training that is given without learning how to bounce back.

Dr. Manas also received the following awards: -

  • Defence Technology Spin-Off Award (2007)
  • Scientist of the Year (2006)
  • Agni Award for Excellence (2005)

The Centre for Happiness at IIT Kgp is also associated with HIDCO’s Happy City Project. Through this project, the centre will prepare a roadmap for developing cities with the happiness quotient.
