The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been chosen by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology's department of science and technology to participate in the Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions (GATI) initiative to increase the proportion of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Institutions that sign the GATI charter will commit to gender equality principles and develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) plans of action for structural and cultural reform.
About the GATI Initiative
GATI was created as a result of a collaboration between DST and British educational institutions. A GATI self-assessment team (GSAT) has also been formed at IIT Madras as part of the GATI project. In IIT Madaras the project is led by nodal officer Preeti Aghalayam, faculty at the chemical engineering department. The GATI team has also created a gender equity charter customized to the Indian environment.
