IIT Madras selected for GATI initiative to increase the presence of women in STEM

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has been chosen by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology's department of science and technology to participate in the Gender Advancement for Transforming Institutions (GATI) initiative to increase the proportion of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. Institutions that sign the GATI charter will commit to gender equality principles and develop SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) plans of action for structural and cultural reform.

About the GATI Initiative

GATI was created as a result of a collaboration between DST and British educational institutions. A GATI self-assessment team (GSAT) has also been formed at IIT Madras as part of the GATI project. In IIT Madaras the project is led by nodal officer Preeti Aghalayam, faculty at the chemical engineering department.  The GATI team has also created a gender equity charter customized to the Indian environment.

Highlights of GATI initiative

IIT Madras will carry out the following activities as part of the GATI initiative:

  • Women leaders will share their stories in a seminar series.
  • Workshops will be conducted at professional improvement and networking for employees of upskilling initiatives.
  • Assistance will be provided to female research researchers in order to increase mobility and possibilities
  • Community outreach initiatives will raise knowledge of the STEM sector, possibilities, and passions in order to pique the attention of young women.
  • IIT Madras will be running worldwide mobility programs for female faculty members.
