IIT Ropar Professor Awarded NASI-Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award

Dr. Durba Pal, Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has been awarded the Young Scientist Platinum Jubilee Award for the year 2017 by NASI i.e. National Academy of Sciences India for her significant work on ‘Role of Fetuin-A in Lipid Induced Insulin Resistance’. Sharing details about her achievement, she indicated that the award would inspire young researchers to take up technological and scientific research related to the problems of societal welfare.

Her research work has successfully established that lipid induced adipose tissue inflammation is majorly dependent on Fetuin-A. On the other hand, insulin resistance suggests that Fetuin-A could be a unique therapeutic target for managing lipid-induced insulin resistance as well as type 2 diabetes.

Explaining about her research work, Dr. Durba Pal said that insulin resistance in humans often leads to obesity. Due to the pervasiveness of obesity, type 2 diabetes has become prevalent in humans. The major outcome of insulin resistance includes chronic low-grade inflammation in insulin target tissues that are fuelled by FFAs i.e. Free Fatty Acids.

The research work done by Dr. Durba Pal was published in Nature Medical Journal. Various renowned journals including Science Signalling, Diabetes Journal, Nature Immunology, Nature Cell Biology and Cell highlighted the research work done by her.

This indeed is a great achievement for Department of Biomedical Engineering at IIT Ropar!
