For the upcoming academic session (2018-19), IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) are set to offer 779 seats for female candidates with an objective to improve the gender ration in B.Tech courses. The supernumerary seats for women candidates are above the normal intake of these premier engineering institutes. On the other hand, the total number of engineering seats available for boys in IITs will not be affected. Except for IIT Mandi and IIT Tirupati , all other IITs have added seats for female candidates. All the details in this regard are elaborated below.

The IIT Council had approved the supernumerary seats for women students in April 2017. The supernumerary seats will help more women to take up B.Tech courses at premier institutes. The society also needs female role models who have done their B.Tech from the premier institutes.
The total number of women candidates pursuing PG engineering courses at IITs is over 22 percent. With the increase of B.Tech seats for women candidates, the number of women taking up PG engineering courses is expected to increase in the coming years.
