Nowadays, most of the engineering aspirants are evincing keen interest in Aerospace engineering, as the stream offers broad career scope. Considering the demand and interest among the students towards Aerospace engineering, Indian Institutes of Technology are planning to expand in this field.
Currently, only the four following IITs across India offer a course in Aerospace engineering: -
- Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur
- Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
- Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur
All these four IITs together offer 200 seats in Aerospace engineering. Now, the premier technical institutes are planning to increase the number of seats considering the demand and interest among the students.

One of the professors of an IIT revealed that the multi-disciplinary approach for students is the main reason for the rise in demand for aerospace engineering. The course allows the students to develop a systematic way of thinking. He further added that the demand for qualified and skilled professionals in the Aerospace sector has increased in the past few years.
Explaining about the career in Aerospace engineering, Dr. PVM Rao of IIT Delhi explained that a career in Aviation is apt and well suited for students from diverse streams like information technology, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering. For making an aeroplane and its subsequent maintenance, qualified professionals from diverse streams of engineering is necessary.

Dr. Rao further pointed that the premier technical institutes have observed the interest among the students in Aerospace engineering in an aero-modeling competition ‘Boeing’ that was conducted at Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi . Around 800 students from 300 engineering colleges across India took part in the competition.
