The class of 2018 at the IITs has had a great start in terms of placements. The prestigious institutes have recorded an impressive rise in the pre-placement offers (PPOs) rolled out in 2017. Till mid-August the students of the current batch have bagged more PPOs than their seniors.
Leading IITs have recorded a sharp rise in the number of pre-placement offers i.e. from 33% in 2016 to 85% in 2017. IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati , IIT Hyderabad and IIT Kharagpur have reported that more students are likely to secure jobs before the commencement of the final placements.

Pre-placement Offer Highlights:
- Highest package offered through PPOs at IIT Ropar was Rs. 30 lakh per annum rolled out by SMS Datatech.
- At IIT Roorkee , the highest package offered was Rs. 28.16 lakh per annum.
- Next Education – Hyderabad-based learning solutions provider – hired students from IITs for the first time and rolled out 7 PPOs.

IITs receive pre-placement offers till the end of October. With more than two months left for the placements to close, the premier institutes are expecting more of their students to get PPOs. The batch of 2018 is expected to get better offers than the previous batch which suffered a great loss in employment options due to demonetisation and US elections.
Recruiters are relying on the internship channels to recruit students. Two-month long summer internships give the recruiters a chance to test the skills and competency of students. It also enables the firms to engage with the students as early as possible and retain the talent that suits them, said a Wipro spokesperson.

Chairman of the Career Development Centre at IIT Kharagpur, Debasis Deb said that the institute has been encouraging students to perform well during their internships. Open houses have also been organised to emphasise the importance of summer internships in getting better job opportunities.
