In-house Quota for Mumbai Junior Colleges Reduced to 10%

To make way for open category students willing to seek admission in Junior colleges of Maharashtra, the education ministry of Maharashtra has decided to bring down the in-house quota to 10% from the previous 20%.

Though the SEBC (Socially & Economically Backward Classes) quota has been set to 16% and EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) quota has been set to 10%, Vinod Tawde, education minister of Maharashtra has given the open category students 7% seat assurance.

The decision came under consideration after there were reports that open category students will be left with no seats if the SEBC and EWS quotas are implemented. The number of Junior colleges in Mumbai is 1,887, out of which 639 colleges have minority quota. Out of the 639, 306 are minority colleges only. If the previous year’s applications process was kept same, the reservation of seats would be like, 52% for SC, ST, OBC, NT, etc; 10% for EWS, 16% for SEBC, 20% in-house quota and 5% for management quota. Thus, amounting to 103% seat reservation. To counter the problem, the decision of reduction of in-house seats has been taken.

The schools of Maharashtra have been asked to present a detailed list of junior colleges that are under them and also details of the branches, subjects and intake capacity are also to be presented.

Students with Arts, Science or commerce background can apply in maximum 10 junior colleges. The ministry has directed the Junior Colleges to start classes when 75% of the seats are filled.
