According to a latest report, Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL) of Mumbai University (MU) this year has received more number of registrations from women candidates as compared to male candidates.
Of the 76,495 candidates enrolled for IDOL, about 45,559 or 60 percent are women. Also, in the last eight years, the percentage of female enrollment at the institute has been increasing steadily from 52 percent in the academic year 2008-2009.
As per the data, the female students have outnumbered their men counterparts mostly in the post-graduate courses offered at IDOL. Some of these courses include M.Sc Computer Science, M.Sc Information Technology, M.Sc Mathematics, M.A. Education, M.A. and M.Com.

However, many women discontinue their courses mid-way due to responsibilities that come up after marriage. Director of IDOL, Ambuja Salgaonkar appreciated women for daring to register themselves at the institution.
Often women find it difficult to pursue regular education after they get married and instead opt for distance learning,
According to experts, the rise of enrollments of the female students at IDOL shows that distance learning has gradually become a manageable alternative for women who have to continuously struggle between their work and home responsibilities, especially after they complete their graduation.
