Literacy in a Digital World – Theme of International Literacy Day 2017

  • Today, digital technologies are transforming the way people live, work, socialise and learn everywhere at a record speed.
  • UNESCO aims to improve all aspects of lives of people including access to information, mode of work, industrial production, social services, networking and knowledge management.
  • People who do not have enough access to digital technologies and knowledge and the required competencies and skills to navigate them may end up being marginalised in highly digital driven societies.
  • Literacy is an essential skill that makes people come up with digital technologies.
  • UNESCO will also focus on challenges and opportunities in promoting literacy.

According to UNESCO, more than 750 million adults lack basic literacy skills, which is why it aims to address the issue by 2030.
