Students of SRM University created history, have won ITC’s flagship event - 'iTech 2016’ that is also popular by the name AR/VR Hackathon. The team comprised of four students namely Aditthya Ramakrishnan, Anshuman Pandey, Raghav Gupta and Rohan Pooniwala. The 30-hour hackathon event was held on July 16 and 17. The aim of the annual technology innovation & co-creation platform is to encourage entrepreneurship at its Bengaluru campus.

The contest was based on augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) for which more than 1700 teams had applied. Out of these only 45 teams were called for the final round and amongst them was the team from SRM that was declared the winner of the contest and was given a cash prize of Rs 3 lakhs by the MD and CEO of ITC Infotech, Ms. Sushma Rajagopalan.

The contest was judged by a panel of business leaders from ITC Infotech partners and clients including prominent names like Microsoft, KONE, PTC, BAT and SAP Labs.

The team from SRM University had developed a mixed reality smartphone app called ‘NOMI’ which stands for ‘Know Me!’. The aim of their application is to offer an enhanced shopping experience to consumers in stores as well as online shopping. The app with its immensely interactive environment will help consumers to pick the right product by providing all the details about the product. The technology used by the team for the app is Vuforia and Unity for the development and further integrated it efficiency with artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning capabilities.

The winning team members Anshuman and Aditthya are also founders of the Next Tech Lab which they started in January 2016. They have also done their internship from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, at the MIT Media Lab for one semester. Rohan and Raghav, the other two team members founded the Minsky (Artificial Intelligence) and Mixed reality groups at Next Tech Lab. The SRM VR app was also developed by them and it is now available on the Google Play store.

The event has opened various gates for all the four team members and they have also been approached by VCs and investors as the project they built is very viable for the market.
