The Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) that offer skill education will become formal schools soon on the lines of schools affiliated to ICSE and CBSE. Through this initiative, ITI graduates will get a chance to pursue regular courses in other colleges and schools. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship made the proposal, and HRD Ministry has approved it. The move will benefit 2 million students graduating from around 13,000 ITIs every year.

For this purpose, the ministry will set up a separate board on the lines of ICSE and CBSE that will award certificates. The board will award certificates at par with those awarded to students who clear Class 10 & Class 12 from regular boards. The certificate awarded by a separate board to ITI graduates will help them take up regular courses in other schools and colleges.
According to sources, National Council for Vocational Training will conduct academic examination and certification for Class 10 & Class 12 for the ITI students. However, the formal announcement of the approved proposal has to come from the centre. Once the proposal is formalised, everything will go according to the process planned.

The HRD Ministry is also in the plan to grant autonomy to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
