Jadavpur University Bags Complete Academic Autonomy; To Get Rs. 50-100 Crore Grant

Jadavpur University Bags Complete Academic Autonomy; To Get Rs. 50-100 Crore Grant

Jadavpur University (JU) has been granted complete academic autonomy and has been featured in the list of 52 universities or institutes that were granted greater autonomy and moderate to greater autonomy . Satisfied with the performance of JU, the Union Cabinet has approved a grant of Rs. 100 crore each to ten universities that have scored 3.5 or above in NAAC assessment . Similarly, 20 stat e-level universities that have been awarded autonomy will get Rs. 50 crore. JU is expected to get over Rs. 50 crores to Rs. 100 crore from the central government .

Vice Chancellor of JU, Mr. Suranjan Das thanked MHRD for the surprising announcement. The grant of funds will regulate misapprehensions about the innovative courses that must be offered in self-financing mode. The grant will help the varsity to utilise the newly accorded status and to attain greater heights of academic excellence. However, it would be better if both state and central universities in Category I provided with a uniform amount of financial assistance , he opined.

Adding further, the VC of JU explained that the financial grant would be utilised for developing high-quality infrastructure , provide assistance to teachers, students and scholars, launch interdisciplinary socially relevant teaching and learning courses and develop international academic networks . However, the decision regarding utilisation of funds must be taken by the varsity community and not by the administration, he concluded.

As per MHRD, the universities in the elite category will be allocated funds for improving the overall quality of higher education.
