Jamia Millia Islamia is the first university in the country to offer UG and PG courses specifically for Army personnel. With an objective to initiate it, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Lt. General Ashwani Kumar (Adjutant General), Ministry of Defence, and Vice Chancellor of JMI, Professor Talat Ahmed.
The varsity has initiated the registration process for undergraduate and postgraduate courses for which Army personnel can register through the official website of the Centre for Distance and Open Learning of JMI.

Expressing his happiness about the move taken by Jamia, Lt. General Ashwani Kumar said that Army personnel usually retire in their 30s and it is essential to provide them with an opportunity to pursue their education aims so that they can lead a comfortable and healthy professional life after their retirement from the Army. If qualified, they will be in a better position to compete for job opportunities in the public and private sector basis their interest and aptitude.
Highlighting the provisions of the MoU, Vice Chancellor of JMI, Professor Talat Ahmed said that Jamia has always tried to commit itself to nation-building through the courses and collaborations it enters into. With such an initiative to provide training to the Indian Army, it feels nothing short of an honour and pride, he added.

Jamia Millia Islamia had also recently signed a MoU with the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force to enable over 12,000 personnel take up higher education. It has become the first university to offer courses to all the three forces of the country.
Subsequently, JMI has also begun the admission process for M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes for the academic session 2017-18. In an official notification, it stated that interested applicants must complete the online application process for M.Phil and Ph.D. courses and send a printout of application form along with all relevant documents to the university on or before October 11, 2017.
