The Union Minister of Human Resource Development Mr Prakash Javadekar inaugurated Indian Institute of Technology, Jammu (IIT Jammu) on 6 th of August 2016. He appreciated the state for keeping pace with the education system despite the social unrest. He expressed his happiness that the gross enrollment in the higher education has been increasing.

He mentioned that compared to national average of 23.6 percent, the enrollment of boys in the higher education is 25 percent and girls is 27 percent. A total number of 90 students have enrolled at IIT Jammu for the new first academic year.
The minister said that the central government is giving prominence to the creation of higher education institutions, and IIT Jammu is the first step towards that direction. The government has also launched free online coaching programme for the aspirants of IIT.

The minister announced that Rs.100 crore has been allocated for NIT, Srinagar under a unique plan to promote research and development. The government also provides funds for the development of infrastructure in IITs, he added.
He said that around 2,000 research proposals were received and out of these, 450 have been shortlisted. The government funds 300-400 research proposals. The intention is to facilitate the researchers to teach as well as research.
