Premier central University of the country, JNU or Jawaharlal Nehru University, has been recently identified as the Best Central University in India for the ‘Visitor’s Award’ of 2017. It is the third edition of the awards that were instituted in the year 2015 to promote healthy competition amongst universities.

The selection committee was headed by people from varied professions. These included:
- Omita Paul, Secretary to the President
- Secretary of Department of Science & Technology
- Secretary of Department of Higher Education
- Chairman of University Grants Commission or UGC
- Director General of CSIR or Council of Scientific and Industrial Research
Rakesh Bhatnagar, a JNU professor won in the best research and innovation category last year.
Institutes applying for best university category were judged on several parameters like -
- Statistics of the student-faculty ratio
- Extent of research output received
- University rank in NIRF or the National Institutional Ranking Framework
- Number of patents filed by the university

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee will handover the award to M. Jagadesh Kumar, Vice-Chancellor of the University on March 6, 2017.
Visitor’s Award for Innovation has been bagged by Dr. Deepak Pant of Himachal University and the recipients of the Visitor's Award for Research are Professor Shyam Sundar of Banaras Hindu University or BHU and Professor Niranjan Karak of Tezpur University jointly.
